                                                     Line

I have a handout explaining the difference between expressive (free-flowing expressive lines) and directional (more controlled- parallel lines).  I hand out sharpies and they create one of each.  I've done variations on the idea such as dividing their paper in half or fourths and they alternate with expressive and directional lines.

The gel pen drawing going around their name and interests is a lot of fun.  First I give them a handout that asks questions about them:  family and friend's names, what are their favorite interests, music, sports, hobbies, places to go, etc.  Then they can draw images or write words scattered all over the paper.   Then after a demonstration on how to draw really slow and in control, they start going around those words and/or images until their paper is totally filled.

Students can work from their imaginations or look at a visual to get them inspired.  Then they have fun using different types of line to draw.  It is fun to see the variety of subject matter!

I tell them if they spend a couple of classes on it, they can do a combination of line and shape.

If they just use line, then they then do a composition using just shape....  go to shape
